After a Louisiana storm rolls through, plenty of Baton Rouge homeowners look up at the roof and wonder the same thing: is that damage, or is my roof just getting old? It’s a fair question — and knowing the difference can save you from both an unnecessary repair bill and a leak you should have caught early.
What storm damage actually looks like
Our storms bring wind, hail, and flying debris, and the roof usually shows it. After heavy weather, look for:
- Shingles that are cracked, curled, torn, or missing entirely.
- Dark or bruised spots on shingles where hail struck.
- Granules from the shingles collecting in gutters or at downspouts.
- Bent or lifted flashing around chimneys and vents.
- Dents on gutters, vents, or your AC unit — a clue the roof took hits too.
Storm damage tends to show up suddenly and in patches, often on the side that faced the wind.
What normal aging looks like
Wear is gradual and spread evenly. An older roof slowly loses granules, shingles fade and get brittle, and edges start to curl over years, not overnight. If the whole roof looks tired and it’s pushing 15–20 years, you’re likely seeing age rather than a single storm event.
Why the difference matters for your wallet
This isn’t just curiosity. Storm damage is often covered by homeowners insurance, while normal wear is not. If you assume “it’s just old” and skip a claim, you could pay out of pocket for damage your policy would have covered. That’s why it’s worth having a roofer look after any major storm — before the claim window closes.
Don’t climb up to check
We never recommend homeowners walking their own roof, especially a wet or damaged one. It’s dangerous, and it’s easy to miss the subtle hail bruising that a trained eye catches. A ground-level look plus a professional inspection tells you what you’re dealing with safely.
